I have eagerly been preparing for our trip to Disney World in January. Being a bit of a dork and having done the college program, I have been feverishly making all kinds of personalized goods for the vacation! I had been inspired by seeing other photos of painted shoes on Etsy (just search painted shoes).
I began with a cheapie pair of knock off Keds from target ($17) because I was not too confident in my abilities for this project and didn't want to waste money on a nicer pair of Vans or Toms in case I destroyed them!
I did not prime the shoe in any way, I just drew on my image with a mechanical pencil. I had read on other blogs that a mechanical pencil didn't work on their shoes, but it showed up just fine on mine as seen above. I took inspiration from the stained glass from Beauty and the Beast because I figured it would be easiest to color in the lines this way and wouldn't require a lot of artistic ability.
Here is my first shoe painted, I used a pack of Artist's Loft acrylic tube paint from Michael's that I got for 5$ after my 50% off coupon. In retrospect, I probably should have chosen my own colors because it was a real pain to try and mix purple and pink from my pack that did not have true red/blue/yellow colors. I also got a pack of paint brushes with very fine brush tops because this project required a lot of small details. I am only a size 6 so there was not as much room to work as if I were a size 9!
I filled in all of the lines with the colors I wanted, and then went over the areas where the different colors met with black.
I decided to paint the other sides of the shoe to make it cohesive and finished up with a coat of water proofing spray! I cannot wait to hear the reactions to these shoes once we are in the parks!
